Having been in the wedding industry for 13+ years, we've witnessed some truly incredible wedding speeches. Many times, they are the backbone of our teasers and final films. Not only are they a meaningful moment for the bride and groom, but also for each wedding guest in attendance as they provide insight into the couple as individuals and as an inseparable pair. So, we thought we'd share a few tips on how to give a toast that will leave guests cheering and the bride & groom smiling (and make for a great wedding film)!
1. Keep it Short and Sweet
As cinematographers, we understand the impact of being concise. Aim for a 2-3 minute speech that is sincere and keeps everyone's attention. Long speeches can be challenging to sit through and your message may be lost, so by keeping them short you’ll ensure that everyone remains engaged.
2. Tell us about the couple
Share with us what makes them a unique friend or sibling. Hone in on a personal anecdote that reflects some of their key characteristics, and is something that everyone can resonate with. Based on our experience, it’s best to steer clear of inside jokes.
3. Mix Love and Laughter
Weddings are all about emotions, and speeches are no exception. Strike a balance between heartfelt sentiment and playful humor. Trust us, the genuine laughter and teary-eyed moments make for amazing footage. Find the balance!
4. Practice Makes Perfect
Preparation is key. Even the most eloquent speakers should rehearse their lines. Standing in a wedding is an intentional decision by the bride and groom, so your words carry a lot of weight to them. Practice your speech until you're comfortable and confident. This way, you'll deliver it flawlessly on the big day, and we'll capture those magical moments.
